September always feels like the true “new year” in our home. With school starting back up, extracurriculars in full swing, and new schedules for both kids and parents, it can be a whirlwind. I knew this month would bring extra transitions and busyness, so in August I spent some intentional time preparing for it. Looking back now, I can see how those simple efforts really set us up for success—and saved my sanity more than once!
Here are a few of the things I did to make this September run smoothly:
1. Stocked the Freezer with Snacks
One of the smartest things I did was prep snacks ahead of time. I made big batches of mini muffins and rolled out trays of uncooked cookie dough balls.
- The cookie dough balls go straight into the freezer, and when I need a quick after-school treat, I can pop them into the oven. In about 15 minutes, the kids walk in the door to warm, freshly baked cookies.
- The muffins go straight into lunchboxes while frozen. By snack time, they’re thawed and ready to eat.
These little freezer snacks have saved me so much scrambling in the mornings.

2. Created a Simple Lunch Rotation
Packing school lunches can feel like the most dreaded part of the day—mostly because of the constant decision-making. To take away that mental load, I created a lunch rotation.
Instead of reinventing the wheel every day, I now have a set list of rotating options. This ensures variety, but also keeps me from staring blankly into the fridge at 7 a.m. The kids aren’t eating the exact same thing every week, but I’m also not reinventing the wheel daily.

3. Made a Flexible Meal Plan
September weather in New Brunswick can be unpredictable—it might feel like fall one day and the middle of summer the next. To keep meals realistic and flexible, I built a very simple plan using themes instead of rigid menus.
For example:
- Monday: Pasta Night
- Tuesday: Soup or Salad
- Wednesday: Rice or Stir-Fry
- Thursday: Sandwiches or Wraps
- Friday: Meatless
- Saturday: Pizza Night
- Sunday: Family Favorite
This way, I know what category I’m cooking from, but I can adapt based on what’s in season, what’s on sale, or what the weather feels like.
4. Prepped Hundreds of Meatballs
The real game-changer this fall? Meatballs.
In August, I stumbled across a great sale on ground pork and beef. I took advantage of it and spent an afternoon making hundreds of meatballs—both Italian-style and Asian-inspired. I froze them raw on trays, then bagged them up.
Now, whenever time is short, I have ready-to-go protein waiting in the freezer. Meatballs are so versatile:
- Toss them in the slow cooker with sauce and serve over rice.
- Bake them quickly and add to ramen.
- Simmer them in tomato sauce for classic spaghetti and meatballs.
They’ve become my ultimate busy-night dinner saver, and I fully plan to keep this habit going into the future.

Looking Ahead
Taking a little time in August to prepare has made all the difference in navigating September’s chaos. Instead of scrambling every night, I feel like I’ve given myself a buffer of peace and flexibility.
If you’re heading into a busy season, I can’t recommend enough the power of snack prep, simple rotations, flexible meal planning, and freezer staples. Small steps in advance really do add up to a smoother month.
Here’s to surviving September—and actually enjoying it too.
